BIOGRAPHY: Sonofa (pronouced son
oh fah) King was born in Philadelphia to Vashti Torrienti Adams and the
legendary Ben E. King (aka Benjamin Earl Nelson) and so even though his
name is pronounced differently, he was and is the son of a King. With a
father renowned for iconic hits like "This Magic Moment" and "Stand By
Me", and a mother who was a well-known dancer, singer and pianist, Sonofa
definitely had the music in him. Due to "life circumstances" Sonafa was
sent to Cleveland, Ohio to be raised by his great-grandparents, James and
Vashti Williams. Nevertheless by the age of eight, his passion for music
and his singing ability came to light as he began to perform Michael Jackson
songs for his family and friends.
His interest in singing
and performing continued into his teen years and eventually led him to
consider pursuing music as a career. When he was 14, Sonofa joined a band
called "Prophecy" which ended up merging with his brother's band called
"Wicked Funk " to form a mega-band called what else? ….."Prophecy and Wicked
Funk"! This combined band almost got signed to Sun Records but somehow
missed the flight to California and that was that. Around this time, Sonofa's
great-grandmother Vashti passed on and he was reunited with his mother
in Philadelphia. He had an opportunity to learn more about his father's
musical legacy and also to understand his absence from his life. Sonofa's
next move was to join the Job Corps for ten months and to get his G.E.D.
from Benjamin Franklin H.S. before getting back to his music.
In 1986 Sonofa signed
to Philly World Records and recorded his first single, "Anything You Want"
at Alpha International Studios. This single was successful in Europe and
is still selling on iTunes, Amazon and Ebay, however the tragic murder
of his mother sent him into a deep depression which put a halt to his recording
efforts. Time passed and Sonofa worked several jobs to support his wife
Kim and their three children. He eventually returned to songwriting to
collaborate with his son R. Tastik on the songs "Body Close To Mine" and
"Sylvia". Most recently, Sonafa King has signed with Society Hill Records
in the continued effort to share his inherent talents with the world, and
to fully embrace the legacy of being the son of a King.
